So I was just thinking, in my life in the last few years, I’ve probably made friends or acquaintances or just KNOWN PEOPLE numbering somewhere in the region of, say, 500-1000 people. (I don’t keep up with 90% of them on a regular basis, but the average person has a pretty big, if flimsy network.)

OF ALL THOSE PEOPLE, I can’t think of more than maybe a dozen or so who legitimately hate a certain group/race/gender/sexual orientation of people. I mean, lots of people may have a chip on their shoulder about the neighborhood they live in, or may stereotype a group of people internally, but I can’t think of hardly anyone that I know that let those reservations and prejudices get in the way of their daily routine. I can’t think of ANY people I know who are legitimately hate-spewing bigots.

I’m not saying hate and prejudice don’t exist, because we see it every day in the news, in blogs from victims, etc etc. But how much of the actual human race is made up of people with black-and-white, 100% straight up hate wired into their brains, and are happy to show it off? Of those, how many do you think are actually prone to ACTING on this hate in some way?

I don’t mean a pedestrian way of acting on a prejudice like casually opposing gay marriage or anything, I mean the “let’s bring this queer behind a bar and beat him to death with rocks and leave him hanging on a wire fence at the city limits as a warning to others like him to stay the fuck out of our city” kind of hate. How much of the population is able to internally justify something like that, all because of a personal prejudice against a group of people?

For some reason, and maybe this is just because of the part of the world I live in, (which I admit isn’t perfect but come on, Canada’s more tolerant than a lot of other places,) I feel like maybe the image of the HATE-SPEWING BIGOT is exaggerated. Of course they EXIST, but if you threw a coin into a crowd of people, what are the odds that you’d hit a person who would be able to silence their inner conscience and hang someone from a tree because of the color of their skin?

So here’s my question: is the image of the hate-spewing bigot exaggerated in our culture, so that we only ever hear about the REALLY bad things that happen in the world because it makes for more attention-grabbing reads online…

…Or is it that lots of people are in fact hate-spewing bigots, but they just know when and where to speak up and act on it, so as not to “get caught”?

Basically what I’m getting at is, how much of the population is in fact the sort of person who would act on their hate in a real, violent way, and is it a large enough section of the population that it should greatly affect your personal opinion of humanity? Please discuss. I’d love to hear what others from all racial, gender, and orientation camps have to say.

why did this need $150,000

It’s more than just this video It’s a series. And it takes time and money to make a bunch of high-quality videos. I remember there was some controversy about her and whether she planned to really make the videos but it’s clear that she is fulfilling her obligation.

the video doesnt seem like it would require that much money, if any, as it is just anita reading a script she wrote, with pictures and videos in the corner and flashy transitions

The controversy was over the claim that she needed money to buy games and then play them :T

She literally asked for $150,000 because she was unqualified to make this series in the first place and needed money to become qualified but… nope she’s still not qualified.

There are so many other people who could do a better job discussing this exact subject. Like pretty much any female game designer ever. There’s no reason she needed to make this.

I feel like the whole point of making this series should have been to make it palatable to the “game guy” that’s the target demo of things like Gears of War and whatnot. But speaking as one of said guys, this video and entire series bores me to tears.

It seriously upsets me that this series “required” $150,000 to make, and that all it does with that money is make a bland, 1st year TV Broadcasting video that’s nothing more than someone reading a bland, 1st year Fem Studies essay about a subject they knew they wanted to talk about before they even knew enough to have an educated opinion about it.

I’m not saying that what she’s saying in the video is wrong. I support all of what she’s saying. But the whole reason the “game guy” culture is taking offense to this is because she’s an outsider who is criticizing our hobby of choice because of some perceived “high and mighty” feminist sensibility.

“Hey game guys, you’re all stupid louts and you need the evolved mind of a 1st year fem studies essay to teach you why you should treat women better” is such a bullshit thing to make a $150,000 series out of.

The intention and message behind this is forward thinking and has its heart in the right place, but oh my god, this series is the WORST POSSIBLE WAY to communicate it to anyone besides other fem studies majors. WHO IS YOUR AUDIENCE?!

I could have produced this entire series for under $1000. Fuck you.

Matt is one my absolute favorite comedians, and he recently spent about a year writing for the WWE. On this week’s podcast we discuss what exactly that entails, how he got the job, and what it’s like to work for Vince McMahon.

One of my favorite parts of the episode is when Matt talks about how pro-wrestling has influenced everything from comedy to Muhammad Ali to Bob Dylan. I think this is an interesting listen, even if you’re not into the WWE.

Just before Christmas, I got to shoot an interview with Machine Gun Kelly. He ended up being 45 minutes late because of traffic, and when he rolled in, he sat down, pulled out a mason jar of weed, and started rolling a fucking CANNON. I awkwardly asked if he wanted me to let him finish before starting the interview, and he said no, let’s just go. What follows is hands-down one of the funniest interviews I’ve ever been a part of.
